"Nature Beyond Nature" The Nature Conservancy Photography Exhibition

Striking visuals have the power to evoke empathy in the most immediate, visceral way. Compelling stories draw us closer, allowing the audience to feel and perceive on a deeply human level. And behind it all, science offers the structure and insight to understand our world with clarity and intention. We sought to weave these three elements into one immersive experience—merging awe, emotion, and knowledge to reimagine what a nature-based film exhibition can be. So during the 2023 Shanghai Urban Space Art Season, we debuted The Nature Conservancy’s inaugural national outdoor photography exhibition, celebrating its longstanding mission and sparking vital conversations on ecological sustainability. We curated and selected thousands of photographic works accumulated over the past 72 years by The Nature Conservancy (TNC)—the world’s largest environmental nonprofit—featuring images contributed by ecological photographers and conservation areas from around the globe. Beyond the images themselves, we also researched and uncovered the moving stories behind these photographs, and invited expert teams from related fields to help interpret the ecological knowledge embedded within them.
